âYou wonât die. Youâre not the dying sort.â
Blithe Spirit is considered one of the top ten stage comedies ever written. Premiering in 1941 London, it ran for a staggering 1,997 performances over five years, through World War II and often during the Blitz. But donât let that premiere date scare you into thinking this is some stuffy old period piece, as playwright and queer icon NoĂ«l Cowardâs work can still turn a contemporary audience into a cacophony of guffaws. And Seattle Repâs new production, part of their 2024/2025 season, is just the right fit for this upcoming holiday season.
âThe need to laugh together,â said Seattle Rep artistic director DĂĄmaso RodrĂguez, âand the need to connect as a community, during the best and worst of times, remains timeless.â Too true, as this wickedly funny romp from one of Britainâs most celebrated humorists proves. Meet Charles Condomine, a successful novelist looking for ideas for his next book. But when he invites a kooky medium into his home to perform a sĂ©ance, heâand his second wifeâaccidentally come face to face with the ghost of his late first wife.
Starring the likes of Arlando Smith (The Skin of Our Teeth), Kirsten Potter (Photograph 51), and Gin Hammond (ACTâs POTUS) as the central supernatural love triangle, director Allison Narver (Boeing Boeing)is bringing something fresh to this story thatâs already been twice adapted to cinema. And if thatâs not enough, the show boasts a magic consultant credit, sure to dazzle on Seattle Repâs Bagley Wright stage. Subversion and stagecraftâthe perfect night out at the theatre.
Laugh through the holidays at Seattle Rep! Catch Blithe Spirit and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Sweater.
