While most art is contained within the confined spaces of galleries or museums, there’s something to be said for the profoundness of encountering art in an outdoor setting. Connections between line, form, and material and the natural world—wind, leaves, cloud patterns, light—become more apparent in direct contrast.

That’s why the link-up between the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association (NWSSA) and the Kubota Garden in Seattle’s Rainier Beach is set to be legendary. On Saturday, September 28th, Kubota and NWSSA invite visitors to stroll the pebble pathways of the beautifully curated 20-acre Japanese American garden while taking in stone sculptures made by sculptors from across the region.

Last year, visitors were treated to serenely smooth work by Jeremy Kester, twisty complex stonework by Julianne Kohn, and studies in balance by Ken Barnes. When walking through the group show this year, perhaps think about the similarities in the material, shape, and mood of each sculpture and how it relates to the environment of the garden.
