Through Sept 18
Thanks to the classic childrenâs book Goodnight Moon, maybe you, like me, have been talking to the moon since childhood. We arenât alone. For much of human history, the moon has played various roles, from spiritual to scientific. We even called it âtheâ moon because, at the time, we didnât know there were any others. I mean, talk about devotion.
For all the moon devotees and astronomy nerds freaking out over the pictures from the James Webb telescope, itâs time to tap into your artistic astronaut by spacewalking your way to see Satellite Devotion by Tabita Rezaire. The mixed media installation explores the moonâthe earthâs only natural satelliteâand the many ways humans interact with it. Rezaireâs installation, made up of a 12 video-channel dome, examines the moonâs orbit through stories that include astrophysics, agriculture, healing, history, magic, and meditation.
The exhibition will display through September 18th, 2022, at Wa Na Wari. An incubator and amplifier of Black Art, it is located in a fifth-generation, Black-owned home in the Central District. Bonus, in addition to your moon fix, four other artists are included in the exhibit, including my absolute favorite local artist Maury Diakite, a painter whose paintings bend what I imagine possible with watercolor.
