The title of Mt Fog’s 2020 debut EP, Hauntology Vol. 1, refers to a British musical movement whose proponents evoke uncanny echoes of cultural artifacts that trigger an eerie nostalgia. In the case of this release, Mt Fog (aka Seattle vocalist/musician/songwriter Carolyn B.) conjures a miniaturist, synth-music take on Cocteau Twins’ gorgeous goth-pop from their 1980s heyday. Here and on her other releases, Carolyn’s supple voice elegantly splits the difference between Kate Bush and former Seattle folk maverick Tiny Vipers.
Mt Fog’s 2021 album, Guide To The Unusual, was conceived while singing to herself as she took walks in the rain during quarantine, and it carries the intimate, forlorn feeling that tinged those strange, lonely days. The album’s strangely beautiful songs (check out âTurn Into Leavesâ on Bandcamp for a sublime taste) work well while heard on headphones and under the covers.
Last year’s Spells Of Silence blossomed into a much more robust Mt Fog sound, replete with punchy beats that often move in complex patterns and occasionally transport her introspective, ethereal tunes to the dance floor. She’ll have an easier time replicating this new, more aggressive approach with a backing band at the Tractorâwin/win for everybody.
