Tips on how to survive the music industry 🙏

Gordon Raphael has the knack for being in the right place at the right time. He cut his musical teeth as a member of ’80s Seattle bands like Mental Mannequin and Colour Twigs, recorded a couple bands who laid the seeds for grunge (Green River, Bundle of Hiss), and when the music scene exploded in the ’90s, hitched a ride as a member of tribal space rockers Sky Cries Mary. When the scene shriveled in the late ’90s, he headed for the greyer, grittier pastures of NYC. There, he did a demo session for an unknown band who turned out to be the Strokes. He eventually got the nod to produce their first two albums, after which any number of aspiring bands sought out his Midas touch.

It’s a story that begs to be told in detail, and the pandemic gave Raphael the opportunity to get it down in The World Is Going To Love This: Up From the Basement with The Strokes. Now he returns to his former home for some special appearances to promote his latest accomplishment. First up, a book reading and Q&A with fellow muso Ben Ireland at the ever-accommodating Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery in lovely Georgetown. It’s free! Come out and support a local lad made good.
