Get ready word lovers, the second week of March this year will feature an absolute treasure trove of literary events. Thanks to the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWC) convention—in town from March 8th through 11th—you won’t have to look far for any book events. Kick things off with the Beerhall Bookfair at Optimism Brewing on March 8th. This free event features the work of nine independent publishers*. You’ll be able to traipse around Optimism, buy books, listen to readings of poetry and stories, all while sipping a refreshing beer (they also have kombucha on tap for anyone who thinks beer kind of tastes like soap, like me).

*The list: Hosted by Papeachu Press, Beerhall Bookfair features the works from Perugia, CavanKerry, Beyond the Veil, Headmistress, MoonPath, Lost Horse, Blue Cactus, and Birch Rosen. These publishers, most of which are local to the Northwest, specialize in poetry and works from LGBTQ+ and BIPOC authors. If you pick up a book from Headmistress Press (Windowpanes by Elizabeth Wilson, Tender, Tender by Jessica Jewell, and so much more), you’ll be supporting lesbian poets. Any books from Blue Cactus Press will likely be written by an author from a historically marginalized background. And be sure to comb through Lost Horse Press’ poetry collections, but especially the work from the contemporary Ukranian poetry series.
