I laughed when I saw “suburb rat” graffitied across the back of a Lynnwood CVS Pharmacy’s dumpster last year. Lynnwood, a city just north of Seattle, has always been a suburban halfway point. In 1927, Lynnwood’s Keeler’s Corner was the first gas station built after the opening of the Seattle-Everett Highway, now Highway 99. You may know Lynnwood because of its mall (and H-Mart) or from recent headlines: As of August 30th, you can ride the light rail to Lynnwood from Seattle.
I don’t know what Lynnwood will be in 100 years. For now, I know it to be an unpretentious place to hang out, with lots of little gems tucked into its numerous strip malls. Take a day trip here on those gray weekends when an indoor activity and a good snack sound like the right mood. The new light rail station is within walking distance of many thingsโlet’s take a trip to a few of them.

Olympus Spa
This family-owned Korean spa seeks to honor women by giving them a comfortable place to chill. Bring a book and plan to be here all day: a day pass costs $53.
The amenities are heavenly: in the wet area, a sauna and steam room, hot pools, a cold plunge pool, and a mugwort well. Specialty rooms include an FIR Himalayan Salt Room. I love the giant beanbags in their communal lounge. Time your visit so you can eat at the in-house restaurant. Try the Waffle Bapโrice pressed into a waffle iron until crispy, then wrapped up with perillia leaf, greens, and a protein.
Note that Olympus is a nude spa. They’ll give you a robe and towel when you check in. For a little extra TLC, book a basic body scrub and emerge with baby-soft skin. ($105 for 40 min.) If that’s not your thing, the spa menu offers everything from mud wraps to facials to lash extensions. Day passes are 50% off on the day of your birthday.

Tobi’s Tea
There’s nothing like a custom-made, fun drink to set yourself right. I find bubble tea to be super satisfying, and the options in Lynnwood are on par with those of the University District and the International District. One standout local option is Tobi’s Tea, a small kiosk best for a quick stop. Inside, there are a few picnic tables, lots of happy plants, and an aesthetic floral green wallpaper. Every drink they make is stunning. Their bright purple ube latte is Insta-worthy, and the creme brulee pearl latte is the most popular.
Tobi’s makes it a point to use organic milk, and I appreciate that there’s no upcharge for oat or almond milk if you’re feeling something else. I literally crave their salted cheese crema topping and chewy brown sugar boba add-ons; they’d be good on any of their milk teas or speciality drinks. Keep an eye out for dessert pop-ups!

Lynnwood Rec Center
“Self-Care Sunday” doesn’t have to cost you: the best things in life are (almost) free. Since the Lynnwood Recreation Center is a public facility, neither membership nor city residency is required for admission. A $9 single-visit pass includes access to all amenities plus one drop-in fitness classโthink Zumba, yoga, or taekwondo.
The facility was remodeled in 2011 and is LEED Silver Certified. You could probably spend all day here working on your fitness. If I were you, I’d hit the cardio/weight room after class, then wind down in the recreation pool: it features two swirly water slidesโone body slide and one for inflatable tubesโand a lazy river loop. If you’ve got more angst to work out of your system, book one of the racquetball courts or do the lap pool/sauna/hot tub combo. Bring your own lock or rent one for $1. Avoid on weekends unless you don’t mind sharing space with the local youths.

Washington Burrito
Washington Burrito is that hero of heroes, a red-and-yellow beacon open whenever hunger strikes. The line for the drive-thru window can get long, but you can skip it via the walk-up window. There are a few basic picnic tables outside, should you need them.
Here’s what to know about the menu: most burritos are under $9, including vegan and breakfast burritos served all day. Creamy beans, toothsome rice, and crunchy lettuce make for a good textural experience, too. They’re massive and filling, so I would only order the other specialties (carne asada fries, enchilada plates) if you’re splitting the meal with someone else.
Don’t sleep on the horchata. Ask for sides of red and green salsa to go!

Lynnwood Bowl & Skate
A Lynnwood institution, the Bowl & Skate opened in 1956 and 1958, respectively. A major renovation in 2006 officially combined both businesses. The black confetti-patterned carpet looks like it’s from the 90s, which is probably why I feel so nostalgic every time I’ve been here.
The 24-lane bowling alley goes cosmic (black lights on!) Friday through Sunday. For the throwback effect, bring your friends and wear your brightest whites and neons. Book a full lane for $42 per hour; pricing and timing varies. On the skate side, $25 drop-in classes are available every Sunday from 11 am โ 12 pm. That includes your skate rental and admission to the all-ages open skate from 12 โ 9 pm.
