The grumpy Scottish ogre and his cast of fairytale friends have had vivid second lives outside the 2000s film series, popping up in hoards of memes, Instagram and TikTok filters, deadstock fashion collections, and even as the theme of a traveling rave. What on Earth draws us to this green bog monster? Perhaps it’s his begrudging heroism or his unflinching acceptance of himself as an ogre or his friendship with a talking donkey. Or maybe we all want to flick his chewy-looking ears.
In any case, the Seattle Symphony is getting in on the low-brow action. Led by esteemed composer Harry Gregson-Williams, the venerated symphony will perform live an “enchanting orchestral score” to the cinematic masterpiece that is Shrek 2, which will be projected on a giant screen.
Though Ludwig van Beethoven might be rolling over in his grave at this news, the Shrek sequel is ripe with drama fit for Benaroya Hall. The film follows newlyweds Shrek and Fiona as they travel to the kingdom of Far Far Away to meet Fiona’s parents–the King and Queen–for the first time. Unbeknownst to them, their ogre-fied daughter has married an ogre and soon the lovers meet a whole new cast of characters, including Prince Charming and the murderous Puss in Boots. The scandal! The intrigue! The swampiness of it all! We just want to hear how they tackle “Funkytown.”
