Love Battery stood out from other Seattle bands of late ’80s/early ’90s vintage with their heavy, roiling sound, tempered by the swirl of psychedelia. Dayglo, their second album, released in 1992 on Sub Pop, is widely regarded as their best, regularly landing on “best of” lists for Northwest recordings. From the blurry opening salvo of “Out of Focus” to the more contemplative drawl of the closing track, “23 Modern Stories,” Dayglo revels in fuzzy bliss.
Out of print for years, the album has just been newly reissued on vinyl by Portland-based Jackpot Records (sky blue vinyl still available on Jackpot’s website, pink vinyl now sold out; there’s also a yellow vinyl edition to be found at select indie record shops). To celebrate, Love Battery decided to play a few shows. After burning down the house at a recent in-store at Easy Street Records, their next gig is a full-fledged show at the Sunset Tavern. The show sees Love Battery lead singer/guitarist Ron Rudzitis doing double duty as a member of opening act Purple Strange, whose lineup also features ace producer Jack Endino, who remastered the Dayglo reissue. Rounding out the bill is Guest Directors, described as “jazzmasters drenched in reverb.” Future Love Battery performances remain a distinct possibility.
