There isn’t much to do in Seattle on Christmas Day, whether you celebrate the big birth-of-the-day or not! Why not turn this potentially quiet day into a raucous outing with SIFF Cinema Uptown’s Fiddler on the Roof sing-along. You get to be extremely loud in a movie theater and sing with the accompaniment of live Klezmer music.

Director Norman Jewison’s 1971 film adaptation is an enduring story of family, Jewish culture, and tradition! Based on Yiddish stories by Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof premiered on Broadway in 1964 as a bold embrace of diasporic Jewish history. Tevye, his wife, and five daughters live with uncertainty and violence as Russian Jews in the time of the pogroms. Facing forced change from religious persecution and less insidious change like his daughters’ modern attitudes, Tevye stands as a universal figure of the desire for stability and safety.

The themes of Fiddler will stay with you, just like its lyrics. And at this screening, live Klezmer music from Orkestyr Farfeleh will loosen up the crowd. According to the promo, this trio is “not (just) your Bubbe’s Klezmer,” and they play on accordion, clarinet, trombone, and guitarron.
