Given its iconic landmarks, picturesque scenery, and yes, even the weather—cloudy skies often result in better lighting for filming—it’s no surprise the Pacific Northwest has been the setting for too many films and TV shows to mention. But not too many to watch, apparently, at least not for former Stranger scribe David Schmader who’s produced a comprehensive guide on the subject. Filmlandia!: A Movie Lover’s Guide to the Films and Television of Seattle, Portland, and the Great Northwest digs deeply, covering everything from Tugboat Annie to It Happened at the World’s Fair to Seattle Bareback Boyz. It’s also packed with plenty of trivia if you’re planning a film sites tour around the region, going far beyond the usual suspects (i.e., the Space Needle, the Fremont Troll) to reveal such locales as Mt. Hood’s Timberline Lodge a.k.a The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, North Bend’s Mountain Side Shell Station (site of an abduction in The Vanishing) and the Capitol Building in Olympia (where Madonna’s courtroom scenes in Body of Evidence were filmed).
Schmader is known for his scintillating film observations (check out his commentary track on the DVD for Showgirls), and he’ll be chatting with noted film critic and fellow Stranger alum Kathy Fennessy, so a lively discussion is guaranteed. After which you’ll probably want to head to Scarecrow Video to investigate the set-in-the-NW epics you’ve just learned about.
